RED DELICIOUS

About Red Delicious

Red Delicious is perhaps the most iconic-looking apple in the world—with its deep crimson skin, tall elegant shape, and perfectly symmetrical curves, it’s been the poster apple for fruit bowls for over a century. Discovered in Iowa in the 1870s and originally called “Hawkeye,” this variety was quickly renamed for its appealing flavor and appearance, becoming one of the most widely grown apples in the U.S.

Its skin is glossy and a rich ruby red, sometimes with faint streaks or dimples. Red Delicious apples are low in acidity, which gives them a gentle, mellow flavor rather than a tangy bite. Their crispness varies, but when freshly picked, they offer a satisfying snap that makes them pleasant for simple, no-fuss snacking. While not often a baker’s go-to, Red Delicious has earned its place as the apple for eating out of hand. Its natural sweetness pairs well with cheese plates, green salads, and school lunches alike—a timeless classic that’s instantly recognizable and forever tied to the image of the “perfect apple.”
